PLC Firmware for Migrations: CE16, Latest Firmware, and Bus Firmware Matching

The Standard

For M580 PLC migrations, the following firmware baseline should be used:

  • Control Expert 16.0 (CE16) — the current supported programming environment.
  • Latest available PLC firmware — check Schneiders download site for the most recent stable release for your CPU model.
  • Bus firmware must match — the loaded bus firmware version must be the equivalent version for the PLC firmware you are running. Mismatched bus firmware can cause communication failures with I/O modules.

Firmware and Data Storage Password

For X80 platform firmware versions greater than 4.0, a Firmware and Data Storage password is required. This password must be set and documented before performing firmware updates. Without it, you cannot flash the firmware or access certain configuration areas.

Before You Start

  1. Confirm the target PLC CPU model and current firmware version.
  2. Download the correct firmware package from Schneider — verify the version number and CPU compatibility.
  3. Verify you have the Firmware and Data Storage password (for firmware > 4.0).
  4. Check the bus firmware compatibility matrix — Schneider publishes which bus firmware versions are compatible with which PLC firmware versions.
  5. Back up the current PLC program and configuration before any firmware changes.

Common Mistakes

  • Updating PLC firmware but not the bus firmware — results in I/O communication errors that may not appear immediately.
  • Using an older version of Control Expert with newer firmware — CE16 is required for current firmware versions. Older CE versions may not recognize the firmware or may produce incompatible builds.
  • Forgetting the firmware password — this will block the update process entirely, and recovery may require Schneider support.
